• Texas Southern returns to its home stadium (renamed PNC Stadium) for the first time since its season opener as they’ll host Alcorn State Saturday at 7 p.m.
• TSU’s two-game winning streak came to an end at Grambling State last week. TSU will face its final two SWAC West opponents over the next two weekends in Alcorn State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
• TSU will face Alcorn State for the first time since 2018 as the SWAC rotation moved ASU off TSU’s schedule in 2019. Formerly of the SWAC East, ASU is now in the SWAC West as of 2021 and will face TSU on a yearly basis.
• Saturday’s contest will feature live audio on KTSU 90.9 FM and broadcast on AT&T Sports Southwest.
• TSU will have three of its final five games at home inside PNC Stadium.
• The SWAC opted for a spring schedule due to uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 last fall. TSU could only get two games in due to COVID-19 protocols surrounding the opposing team or at TSU. The contest against Baylor marked the first time TSU played back-toback weekends since the final two weekends of November 2019.
• Due to Alcorn State opting out the 2021 spring season, TSU was awarded a win via forfeit by the SWAC.
• Alcorn State dropped its first two of three before rolling off three straight wins as the Braves are undefeated in SWAC play. Felix Harper ranks fourth in the SWAC with 1,286 passing yards and nine touchdown passes. Running back Niko Duffey is the top rusher and ranks third in the SWAC with 564 yards while Lecharles Pringle leads ASU at receiver with 28 receptions for 405 yards and five touchdowns while Keyron Kinsler and Juwan Taylor rank 8-9 in the SWAC with 38 tackles apiece. • TSU’s roster is a full of youth in key areas as 58 players are either true or redshirt freshmen.
• Prior to last year’s forfeit, ASU had a seven-game winning streak over TSU from 2012-18. TSU’s last on-field win against ASU was in 2011. TSU has yet to defeat current ASU head coach Fred McNair.
• The Tigers feature a third-year head coach in Clarence McKinney. A Houston native, McKinney attended high school across the street at Jack Yates High School and played collegiately at Montana State and the University of Mary. He also served as head coach at Yates before joining the staffs at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona.
• Clarence McKinney is the 17th head coach in the history of Texas Southern Football. McKinney has a task ahead as the program has only had 28 winning seasons in 75 years of existence and hasn’t recorded a winning season since 2000.
• McKinney won as a student at Yates High School and helped the University of Mary post three winning seasons as a student-athlete in college which made school history. As head coach at Yates, McKinney posted a mark of 30-8 over three years before moving on to the collegiate ranks as an assistant. As an assistant at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona, McKinney has only experienced three losing seasons in his 11 years of collegiate coaching.
