Texas Southern Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger and Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Enhancement Kimberly Evans were recently honored by SAFE Diversity for their efforts in supporting the organization.

Founded by Mrs. Thelma Scott and formerly named Barbara Jordan Endeavors, the purpose of the SAFE Diversity is to reduce the drop-out rate and increase suicide prevention awareness training that support students with “Unique Abilities” in high school to help them complete their education. SAFE Diversity’s vision is to encourage and empower students in areas of self-awareness to become advocates for people with disabilities that will help create a safe place and nurturing environments for all students through its high school Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math Program (S.T.E.A.M). In addition, SAFE also provides scholarship funds and mentoring programs for high school and college students.

For the past few years, the Texas Southern Department of Athletics has been heavily involved with SAFE’s Diversity Olympics Spirit Day which celebrates national diversity, equity and inclusion education month. The department’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) have volunteered their time at the event by assisting the SAFE staff in the operation of the event in addition to participating in events with the students.
