HOUSTON – TSU began to warm up at the plate on Sunday but fell victim to a six-run third inning by Houston as they dropped the finale of its baseball season opener.

UH scored on a two-out single to open up the bottom of the first and added a sac fly in the second for an early 2-0 lead. UH hit a leadoff double to open the third and homered two batters for a 4-0 margin. Two walks and a fielding error loaded the bases which gave way to a grand slam and an 8-0 deficit.

TSU scored its first run in the fifth on D’Artagnan Padron’s RBI single which drove in Nic Garza. Oscar Ponce homered to open the sixth for TSU’s second run but UH scored on a passed ball with two outs in sixth to take the run back. The Tigers scored twice in the seventh after Justin Cooper’s RBI and a wild pitch which scored Tyrese Clayborne for their final runs of the afternoon.

TSU rolled out four pitchers on Sunday as Adam Dearinger was tagged with the loss as he saw three innings of action. Brian Williams came on in relief and struck out two while allowing no hits in three innings of action followed by Jesse Garcia and Adolf Castillo.

Nic Garza continued to sizzle from the plate as he finished 3-for-3 with a run scored. Garza wrapped up the weekend series with a .750 average (6-for-8), two doubles and an RBI. Jordan Vidato was 2-for-4 with a run in Sunday’s game.

TSU is back in action Tuesday night at TCU live on ESPN+ at 6:30 p.m.
