The Texas Southern women’s basketball team returned to the winner’s column in a big way as they defeated Mississippi Valley State at home in a midweek conference showdown 78-66 on Tuesday night.

Although both teams started evenly in the first quarter with just four points separating both teams, TSU (3-6, 2-5 SWAC) took the clear advantage from MVSU (3-12, 1-10 SWAC) in the second quarter thanks to a 21-11 scoring run from the 6:48 mark onwards until halftime.

The main proponent for TSU’s lead at the break was redshirt junior Quatera Limbrick as she scored 17 points in the first half, tying her previous season-best Feb. 13 against Grambling State. She eventually finished the game with a team-best 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting (3-of-5 from beyond the arc), three rebounds, two steals, and an assist.

MVSU didn’t fall down silently through the night as they remained within 10 points through the third quarter and well into the fourth. That set the stage for MVSU’s final push towards tying the game as they came within four points of the Tigers for a 55-51 score at the 5:58 mark.

But that was the closest MVSU came towards the tie as the Tigers pressed ahead with an 11-6 run which was jumpstarted by Britnee Gabriel and her six points. Gabriel’s play helped settle the affair and earn TSU its third win of the season.

In addition to Limbrick’s stellar outing, Jenay Bojorquez contributed with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting across the field along with three assists, three steals, two rebounds and one block. Ataiya Bridges finished the game with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

TSU also set a pair of seasonal records in their win over MVSU. The team’s five blocks in the game matched their previous best of the year which was done on Jan. 16 against Grambling. They also made nine three-pointers in the game, another season-best.

TSU is back in action Thursday night against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 5:30 p.m. inside the H&PE Arena.
