CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES:
• Mississippi Valley State’s Eric Chism, Grambling State’s Chellane Jones, and Southern’s Georgeanna Felder and Reginald Redding were honored as the SWAC Track and Field Athletes of the Week for competition occurring Jan. 15-16. The foursome combined for two victories and five top-10 results, and each athlete ranks at or near the top of the conference in their respective disciplines.
• Almost all teams in the SWAC will be in action this weekend. Grambling State, Mississippi Valley State Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Southern and Texas Southern (women only) will head to the Arkansas State Invitational and Multis. At last year’s meet, UAPB’s Sireta Roach claimed victory in the women’s shot put. Alcorn State will compete along with Alabama A&M at the Emory Crossplex Invitational. At 2015’s Emory Invite, Alcorn State’s Darryl Jones won the men’s triple jump event.
• Of the 16 events competed in among SWAC schools for Indoor Track and Field, athletes from Texas Southern currently rank No. 1 on conference indoor performance lists in eight of those meets – 60m hurdles, 1-mile run, 3,000m run, 5,000m run, high jump, pole vault, triple jump and weight throw. On the women’s side, athletes from Alabama State lay claim to the top spot on conference performance lists in 11 events.
• Prairie View A&M and the men’s team of Texas Southern are idle this week.
