CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES:

• The SWAC Digital Network will showcase the defending champion Texas Southern Lady Tigers against one of this year’s surprises in Arkansas-Pine Bluff, as UAPB heads to Houston for double-header action. First pitch is set for noon on Saturday, April 2. Visit swac.org for more information.

• Alabama A&M currently stands at 5-1 in the SWAC after a road sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff last week. The Lady Bulldogs are on pace to surpass last season’s win total in conference play (7), and doing so would give them their best win total in SWAC play over the last five seasons.

• Jackson State ended a 10-game slide with a 14-4 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday. The losing streak was the second-longest for the Lady Tigers in the past five seasons.

• This weekend features, statistically, the top pitchers in the SWAC as Maddie Phelps and the Alabama State Hornets will face Ashley Breal and the Alcorn State Braves. Phelps leads the SWAC in ERA and wins, and Breal paces the SWAC in strikeouts.

• As of now, there are two teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference boasting a batting average of .300 or better collectively: Alabama State (.313) and Southern (.305)

• Tiana Sanders of Alabama A&M currently leads the league with eight home runs this season. Her totals in the category ties the high mark from last season and at her current pace, Sanders would end up with around 13 home runs, which would be the second-highest total by a conference player in the last six years.

• Alabama State ranks ninth nationally in doubles per game as a team (1.75), and Texas Southern is ranked third in the country in triples per game (0.39).

• Southern’s Kiara Suttles is ranked No. 5 nationally in RBI per game (1.50). The sophomore is in the midst of a power surge this season, as she has already tied her home run total from last season (5) and boasts the 10th-best slugging percentage (.897) in the country.

• Texas Southern lays claim to the highest RPI in the conference (244).
