CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES:
• League play begins this weekend as SWAC schools will square off starting Friday. Highlighting the opening slate of conference action is a three-game series pitting the defending division champions -- Jackson State (Eastern) and Texas Southern (Western) -- against each other.

• In addition to this marking the opening week of conference play, Alcorn State will test its mettle against the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide later in the week. This marks the third game for the Lady Braves against a ranked opponent, as they have played No. 5 Louisianan-Lafayette twice this season.

• The Southwestern Athletic Conference will also get some time in the ESPN spotlight as Texas Southern is set to face Mississippi Valley State on Thursday, March 24 at 3 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPNU.

• With two wins over Jarvis Christian on March 16, UAPB improved to 8-16 and has surpassed 2015’s win total (6).

• En route to being named College Sports Madness SWAC Player of the Week, Charlene Castro of Alabama State tied a SWAC season-high with five RBI in a single game during a 11-4 win vs. Tennessee State on March 10.
