CONFERECE NEWS AND NOTES:
• With their season-opening victories against Kentucky State on Feb. 12, Alcorn State has already tied last season’s win total (2). The Lady Braves outscored KSU by a combined 9-1 margin during their victories.
• Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Paige Garcia looks to be well ahead of last season’s pace from an RBI production standpoint. Garcia, who accounted for 19 RBI all of last season, has already collected nine RBI through five games this season. Teammate Maria Aguilar has scored seven runs this season, and projects to surpass last season’s total in the category (8) sooner rather than later. Both currently lead the conference in those respective categories during the early goings of the season.
• Southern’s Kiara Suttles went 7-for-9 in SU’s first three games, all victories for the Lady Jaguars. Suttles had two home runs and 9 RBIs while hitting .778 at the plate and amassing a 1.444 slugging percentage. Her best outing came in Southern’s 22-0 win over Rust College, when she went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and two homers, one of them a three-run shot.Suttles, who won SWAC Hitter of the Week for her performance, currently stands second in the nation in batting average and No. 6 in the nation in slugging percentage.
• Jackson State’s Merina Young was named SWAC Pitcher of the Week after posting a 1-1 record and a 1.91 ERA during the maiden week of games.
• Alcorn State will take on two teams that enter the season ranked in the top 25. The Braves will face No. 5 Alabama on Mar. 22 and will face No. 7 Louisiana-Lafayette twice during the Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational Feb. 26-28. Mississippi Valley State will also test its mettle against the Tide on April 5.
• Jackson State will be seeing a few Power 5 conference teams as well, as the Lady Tigers will face Iowa State and the University of Texas during the University of Houston Tournament this weekend.
