Byron Rimm II has resigned as men's basketball coach at Prairie View A&M after more than 10 seasons on the job. Rimm II had a 115-195 record with the Panthers.

That record includes a 1-18 mark this season. The Panthers are 1-6 in Southwestern Athletic Conference games.

Third-year assistant coach Byron Smith has been named the interim head coach and said he is aiming to become the head coach on a permanent basis.

This is not Smith's first run in the SWAC. He was an assistant coach at Texas Southern in 2009-10 and helped the Tigers qualify for the NCAA Tournament. That was his second stint with Texas Southern. In 2000-2001 he was the Tigers' interim head coach.
