- The 2016 baseball season kicks off with 40 games for the SWAC in the opening week.
-Alabama State and Texas Southern were predicted to take the SWAC East and West regular season titles this year, by a vote of conference head coaches and SIDs.
- Alabama State battery mates, Joseph Camacho and Chris Biocic were selected as SWAC Preseason Pitcher and Defensive Player of the Year. Jackson State’s Jesus Santana was tabbed as Player of the Year.
-Alcorn State and Prairie View A&M both have new skippers for the 2016 season. The Braves welcomed Bretton Richardson to Lorman this fall while the Auntwan Riggins was selected to lead the Panthers.
-Alabama State head coach Mervyl Melendez is one win shy of 500 career victories (499-420). Coach Melendez and the Hornets open the season with a weekend series at Northwestern St.
-UAPB, MVSU and PVAM all face off against 2015 NCAA Tournament teams this week. The Golden Lions take on No. 11 TCU on Feb. 23, with the game airing on Fox Sports SW+. The Delta Devils two contests at No. 22 Arkansas (Feb. 23-24) will air on the SEC Network+ while the Panthers face Texas A&M on Feb. 24, also on the SEC Network+.
-Southern, Grambling State, Alcorn State and Prairie View are set to take part in the MLB Urban Youth Invitational in New Orleans. This will be SUBR’s ninth season in the Invitational while it is the 5th season for Grambling State. Four SUBR players and two PVAM players honed their skills at different Urban Youth academies in New Orleans, Compton, Calif., and Houston.
