Basketball Teams Close Out Regular Season Saturday Afternoon Against Southern At M.O. Campbell Center

The 2020-21 regular season comes to a close today as the TSU basketball teams host Southern University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the M.O. Campbell Center in Houston. Both games can be heard live on KTSU 90.9 FM as a video stream will be unavailable unfortunately due to networking issues.

The women’s team is coming off a big win over Alcorn State Thursday night as the win sealed a berth in the upcoming SWAC Tournament next week in Birmingham, Ala. Saturday’s opponent in Southern enters in third place and when head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke matches up against them, its guatanteed to be an exciting contest as Cooper-Dyke is 8-8 all-time against Southern. Last season, both games came down to the wire in the closing seconds as both teams split the season series. This marks the first match-up for both teams in 2021 as the first contest was postponed in January. Cooper-Dyke is 37-27 all-time in the month of March and 6-3 at TSU.

At halftime of the men’s game this afternoon, the team will honor three senior student-athletes in a halftime ceremony.

On the men’s side, TSU closes out its gauntlet of games as this marks the seventh and final game over a 13-day period. Despite the intense schedule, TSU has risen to the occassion and is 5-1 during the stretch. The Tigers are coming off a tough contest against Alcorn State Thursday night which saw them battle back from a double-digit deficit in the second half to earn a gritty win in a tournament type situation. TSU currently sits third in the SWAC standings and is assurred of finishing no lower than third place. The Tigers will await their postseason seed after today’s contest.

Head coach Johnny Jones is 41-32 all-time in the month of March and 11-4 at TSU. Jones is 5-3 lifetime against Southern University and 3-2 against SU’s Sean Woods. TSU is 19-7 against SU since March 5, 2009 and has won 12 of the past 16 contests since March 8, 2014.

This marks the first match-up for both teams in 2021 as the first contest was postponed in January. 

Prior to the start of the men’s games, the team will honor six senior student-athletes in a pregame ceremony.
