Baseball Wins Tuesday Doubleheader Over Huston-Tillotson
The Texas Southern University baseball team drove its way past Huston-Tillotson University for a doubleheader sweep and to jump its winning streak to seven with a 3-2 and 14-5 wins in come-from-behind fashion.
TSU (14-6) would get six hits on the day from Daalen Adderley to lead an offensive attack that used small ball to win the first game and four doubles and a pair of home runs to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 14-5 victory in Game 2 of the Rams (5-17).
Neither team was able to advance a runner past second base until the bottom of the fifth when TSU had runners on second and third by way of a balk with two outs in the frame but could not push anything across to break the scoreless affair.
Adderley’s single with one out in the bottom of the sixth got the wheels in motion for a very positive inning for the Tigers as the next three batters all reached safely by earning walks including Roderick Coffee’s RBI walk. Michael Goudeau then laid down a bunt that, thanks to runners being in motion coupled with some defensive confusion, led to a pair of RBI on the same play for what would prove to be the game-winning scoring play to plate Victor Molina and Jeffry Mercado.
Dade Hensley was masterful on the bump for the Tigers tossing six innings of shutout baseball while allowing just one hit and keeping the batters off balance with nine strikeouts against just one walk and one HBP to up his record to 2-0 on the season while Adolf Castillo picked up the save giving up two runs on two hits and one walk.
Down 2-0 after the top of the first inning, Adderley made sure to carry over the momentum from the day’s first game by singling in CJ Castillo in the bottom of the first.
Both teams would match each other in the number of runs scored in the second and third innings (one and two, respectively) with the runs from TSU coming by way of the longball thanks to Coffee to left field in the second and Vazquez to right to score Castillo in the third.
Vazquez’s two-run bomb cut the deficit down from 5-2 to 5-4, but it would only remain that way for an inning when Jaden Jones sent an RBI single to right field to bring in Goudeau for the game-tying run.
The score would remain knotted at 5-5 until the bottom of the seventh when the Tigers would explode for four runs in the bottom of the seventh. A walk followed by a double then a sacrifice fly would bring in one with two more coming off back-to-back doubles from Mercado and Coffee. The fourth run of the seventh inning was plated when Coffee scored as a teammate from first got caught off first for the frame’s second out.
The eighth inning would see Texas Southern tack on five insurance runs with all five coming with two outs.
The Rams should have gotten out of a sticky situation unscathed, but a dropped fly ball by the left fielder not only helped prolong the inning, but also allowed Adderley and Molina to score. Mercado and Jalen Freeman both recorded RBI singles and Freeman would later score the game’s final run after an error by the HTU pitcher.
Mateo Lamas (3-0) pitched up the victory in relief for the Tigers after tossing two perfect innings with all six batters he faced being recorded as outs.
The Tigers will have a couple of days to prepare for a three-game series against Arkansas-Pine Bluff beginning with a single game on Friday. First pitch for all three days is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Pine Bluff, Ark.
