Baseball Falls In Series Finale

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Texas Southern dropped another high-scoring affair Sunday afternoon as they fell to Sam Houston State in the finale of the three-game series.

Johnathan Thomas led the game off with a double and scored the game’s first run on Jeremy Gaines’ RBI single. The lead was short-lived unfortunately as SHSU led the bottom of the first with a solo homer which catapulted into a seven-run first.

Despite the setback, the Tigers picked up three runs in the second as Gaines drove in Thomas and Avery Chatman followed by Jeremy Almaguer’s RBI single as TSU trailed 7-4. But once again, the momentum was taken back to the SHSU side in the bottom half as the Bearkats scored three times to lead 10-4.

The Bearkats had a trio of multiple run innings to close out the game while TSU scored once in the fourth, fifth and ninth.

Gabe Vasquez, Almaguer and Gaines all finished 3-for5 with three RBI from Gaines and two from Almaguer. Thomas finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored. Brian Williams (1-1) took the loss on the mound as he pitched six innings before giving way to A.J. Winger and CJ Castillo.

TSU is back in action on Tuesday against Huston-Tillotson at MacGregor Park for a 2 p.m. start.
