Alcantara Finishes 3rd At Panther Relays Spring Collegiate Invitational

CYPRESS, Texas –  The Texas Southern University women’s golf team returned to action for the final round of the Panther Relays Spring Collegiate Invitational hosted by Prairie View A&M on Tuesday.

Due to several weather interruptions, only two teams were able to complete both rounds for the first day of play on the women’s side. Senior, Rev Alcantara lead the Lady Tigers after posting back-to-back 77’s for a total of 154 at the end of day one while, Lyla Vaughn was a few strokes back and positioned 16th, while A’Marie Smith was one stroke behind after her opening round of 77.

“The ladies are gradually coming into their own,” Texas Southern University assistant golf coach, Mia Campbell said. “It is exciting to see them become more consistent and trust their games more with each tournament they play. We still have some work to do but I like the direction the team is headed.”

The final round of play concluded on Tuesday afternoon after the remaining teams were able to complete the rest of the second round from the previous day. Alcantara continued to lead the Lady Tigers after she posted her third consecutive round of 77 to place third individually. Vaughn had a two-shot improvement in her final round with a 78 and finished tied 10th individually. Smith placed two strokes behind after carding a 5-over 77 in her opening round.

“I am pleased with our progress as a program,” Texas Southern University Head golf coach, Dr. Gary Grandison said. “We seem to be heading in a better direction as a program.”

The Lady Tigers returns to tournament play March 28-30 at the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Women’s Invitational in Huntsville, Texas.
